WOOOOOT! I'm back, rolling like crazy. It has been a really shitty few weeks with the toe, mainly because most exercise was not available to me without serious toe pain. So I managed to get on the stationary bike a bit, and lifted a few weights here and there, but no jiu jitsu and no running. Since I'm full of mental and physical energy that must be burned, I have been like a barrel of gunpowder lately. Last week I finally just said fuck it, and hopped onto the mats with my toe taped within an inch of its life. I seriously plastered that tiny bastard with the most tape one could have on a three-quarter-inch digit.
Well. As it turns out, taking a little time off is very beneficial in jiu jitsu. It would appear that in my much-resisted down time, all of my skillz were wandering about in my brain, fitting together and refining themselves. I don't know if it was just jiu jitsu exuberance or what but when I went back to the mats I rolled like never before. I mean, I'm still a humiliatingly sucky white belt, but aside from that I was epic. I was actually spending time on top, not just transitionally, but kind of person-surfing. And of course I'm still spending plenty of time on my back, since that's where I'm most comfortable, but started attacking a bit rather than defending only. I had a few rolls that involved quite a bit of tumbleweed-like action, which is my favorite type of rolling, the acrobatic and three dimensional kind.
I heart jiu jitsu. I can't believe there's a sport that is this much fun. Well, volleyball is right up there, but that might also be because I am good at it and it is much less ego-crushing than jits. I played yesterday and spent quite a bit of time admiring my style. I may or may not have rolled unnecessarily once or twice and forced a pancake that could probably have been reached with some quick feet and possibly a j-pass. It's like I had to remind myself that I am a good athlete, not just a BJJ novice. Clearly need some work on the internal sports ego.
