I'm having a sad week. Well, sad in that once in a while my mind wanders to Girly Grapply Camp and I get sad that I'm not there. I had planned to go to Toronto this week, compete in an all-girl tournament, and have a week of all-girl jiu jitsu. With all of the coolest grappliest girls I know. I love camp, so much actually. Probably the most fun experience I've had as an adult, besides maybe parasite lab or cadaver dissection. Anyway, I am once again getting ready to put my house on the market and needed to stay home this week to do all the work for that, because according to my contract on the new house, I must list mine by Sunday. Which will be fine, just needs a week of intense effort.
One of the reasons I like camp so much is that it feels like I'm coming home. That sounds weird and premature to say after only two camp sessions. But the ladies at camp are just...jiu jitsu chicks, which almost always means down to earth, real as hell, girly in the tough, I'll choke-your-ass-out-if-you-call-me-dear way, and always willing to take it to the level of crass on a moment's notice. It's not the most common type of woman, and I like all the other kinds too, but it's nice to feel like everyone else once or twice a year. Combine that with a week of jiu jitsu and you have the ingredients for Awesome Hotdish, or casserole as non-Minnesotans call it. Plus I heard that they went to a crazy drag and burlesque show and I just went to the hardware store for mulch.
But jiu jitsu! I have some things coming together, once in a while. I'm feeling much more comfortable with my top game, though I exercise it primarily on other women and small or inexperienced guys; my turtle is getting attackier; and I'm attempting more and more submissions. Not so great with the finishing always, though. Still, I feel like I'm getting somewhere every now and then, which is better than the recent plateau of jiu jitsu suckiness. That was a low time for me, low like the soft underbelly of the cayman. Even in the bad times, though, jiu jitsu is still the most fun sport ever. It rules.
